EQYPTIAN REVIVAL ADJUSTABLE FIRESCREEN

Superb,  Egyptian Revival Adjustable Fire Screen.  Circa 1870.  This large, elegant Victorian screen features a fine needle point insert of a winged cherub riding a bird while holding a bow. This cupid figure is set among clouds, with flowers. The back of the fabric is silk. Each side of the screen has a long bronze detail of acanthus leaves. There are four large, gilded gesso Sphinx decorating the base, two on each side. The feet are large and well turned and retain their original casters. Most unusual is the fact that this large decorative screen adjusts up via a clever original mechanism still in fine, working condition.  All solid mahogany in original finish with a warm brown patina. The needle point and silk fabrics appear to be original to the piece and are in good condition for their age, requiring only minor restoratons. The gilt gesso Sphinx carvings have a couple of age related stress cracks but are complete. Over-all good condition and a wonderful example of rare, hi-style Victoriana. 46" tall x 28 3/4" wide x 16" deep at base, 67 1/2" fully opened.  Price $3,400.00
