Circa 1850. 19th Century secretaire a' abattant in a fine Classical taste. Beautiful proportions and stunning, perfectly matched crotch mahogany veneers make this a piece of exceptional design and quality. The elegant fitted interior is all original tiger maple, with two secret, spring-loaded drawers. The secondary wood (drawer interiors) are of oak. The sides of the cabinet are crafted from highly figured solid mahogany. The original drop front desk supports are unusual open-work brass. The desk surface is covered in old but very fine condition reddish-brown leather with gold and black fancy trim. Large solid brass triple tongue lock and original key which works all the locks. Above the desk section is one long frieze drawer and below the desk are three long, obvious drawers. Below the drawers is a large, secret or slipper drawer which utilizes the entire base. Fine original grey- veined white marble top. Old repairs to the desk surface where the supports meet the wood and one long filled shrinkage crack to the front and repaired shrinkage cracks on the sides. Looks exceptional from every angle. Nicely re-polished finish in fine condition. 57" tall x 38" wide x 17 1/2" deep, usable writing surface is 27 1/2" wide x 19 1/2" deep. Price $6200.00.
