Circa 1875.
Extraordinary set of six walnut, Renaissance Revival side chairs. Beautifully
proportioned, heavily carved and ornate but not over powering or heavy. Each
elegant dining chair features a sea shell crest flanked by winged sea horses
joined by a Rococo style urn filled with fruit. The back rail is a central
shield flanked on each side by a carved flourish. On each side of the flourish
is an open-mouthed carved animal head. The sides of the long upholstered backs
feature a bold and detailed carving of a bare-breasted women wearing an ethnic
style, draped skirt. The base of the chairs are a simple design with fine turned
front legs. The rear legs are simple and curve back
slightly. Cleaned and re-polished. Old repairs and re-gluing that do
not detract. Freshly re-upholstered in a fine neutral Damask. Very
comfortable, well padded seats and back. Over-all very good condition. 48" tall x
19"wide x 17 1/2" deep with a seat height of 20" . Price
$4500 for the set of six. Banquet table
with
four leaves and chairs $12,000 for all.
