Circa 1885. Rare, fine American Aesthetic Movement compote or calling card tray by the Star Brass MFG CO of Boston. Large and quite heavy  solid cast brass, this is an exceptional example of the Victorian Japanesque Taste popular among the stylish in the last quarter of the 19th century.  The design in high relief on the bowl, features a heron, symbol of long life in Japan, in a stylized natural environment. The pedestal is a graceful, pleated swirl of heavy cast brass The compote retains its original surface and is in excellent condition. It measures 11 1/2" wide x 8 1/4" deep x 6" tall.  Price $495.
